How to Write Effective Prompts

Last Updated on May 23, 2025 by UX World

Writing effective prompts is an essential skill when working with AI.

A well-crafted prompt ensures AI provides useful and contextually relevant responses.

Let me share 8 key tips to write effective AI prompts with examples that will help you get more precise results.

1. Be Specific

When writing prompts, it’s important to be clear and specific about what you’re asking.

Don’t: What do you think about user feedback?

Do: List three ways UX designers can use user feedback to improve a product.

2. Provide Context

The more context you provide, the better the response will be. If you’re asking about a specific topic, provide relevant details to guide AI.

Don’t: Write down requirements for an assessment app.

Do: I am designing an app for an employer who wants to assess potential candidates. Write down key requirements for this app.

3. Specify Length

Specifying the answer’s length helps you get concise responses, especially if you only need a brief explanation.

Don’t: Describe the UX design process.

Do: Describe the UX design process in 50 words or less.

Don’t: Describe the benefits of Figma.

Do: Describe the benefits of Figma in one sentence.

4. Ask for Examples

If you need practical examples, specifically ask for them.

Don’t: How do I write user personas?

Do: Provide an example of a well-written user persona for a food delivery app.

5. Specify Output Format

Tell the AI what format you expect (list, paragraph, steps, table, etc.).

Don’t: Compare different UX design tools.

Do: Compare Figma, Sketch, and Adobe XD in a table format, showing key features, pricing, and platform compatibility.

6. Provide Example(s)

Provide examples with your prompt to help AI give you a response in the desired way.

Don’t: Generate 10 success messages for an e-commerce app.

Do: Generate 10 common and descriptive success messages for an e-commerce app. See the example: [Example]

7. Define a Scope

Defining a timeframe or scope keeps the response relevant.

Don’t: What trends are emerging in UX design?

Do: What are the key UX design trends for 2024?

8. Set the Tone

Set the tone of the response as formal, casual, professional, humorous, or conversational. This ensures that the response matches the context or audience.

Don’t: Explain the importance of UX design.

Do: Explain the importance of UX design in a conversational tone that’s easy for beginners to understand.

These tips will help to improve the clarity and effectiveness of your prompts.
